In 1869 the US government forced large numbers of Indian children into Boarding Schools where brainwashing techniques were used to try to assimilate them and teach them the ways of western society. A popular term was "Kill the Indian, Save the man". Children were stolen from their family, humiliated, physically and mentally abused. More than 100,000 Indian children were stripped of their language, cultural heritage and identity.
Roger Thomas is a professor at the University of Adelaide where he directs Wilto Yerlo, the Centre for Australian Indigenous Research and Studies. Wilto Yerlo is recognized as a center of excellence for Australian Indigenous research and education through partnerships with indigenous people that honors the principle of self determination by sharing knowledge and understanding.

In Youth Encounters, students from diverse backgrounds and faiths met for the first time to discuss each other's heritage and beliefs. The initiative was aimed to share experiences based on their belief background. 2005 theme of the Youth Encounters was "My Identity & Place in Australia", where the 120 students participated in two workshops.
